Past Present Future: The Adventuress Spirit
One great thing (among many) about our clients, is that they really do inspire us and bring so much to our company other than just the work. One such inspiring moment was given to us by Pat Pielage.
While working with Pat & his wife on a remodel of their home, Pat, an avid sailor & outdoorsman extended an invitation for our family to come aboard The Adventuress for a sail on Elliot Bay. At the time we were not totally clear about Pat’s relationship to the 133ft 100 year old wooden schooner (he is on the advisory board of Sound Experience). But who could turn down such an invitation? We had no idea what an impression this opportunity would have on us. And today JAS is very proud to be the “top sail” sponsor for “The Party of the Century” a major fundraising event to benefit The Adventuress & Sound Experience.
Past:
The Adventuress has an enchanting past. It was launched in 1913 for her maiden voyage to the Arctic. The expedition was intended to collect specimens for the American Museum of Natural History in NYC. Specifically they were on the hunt for a bowhead whale whose skeleton would be added to their collection. More about the heritage and history of the Adventuress will be covered at special lecture open and free to the public at Seattle Public Library’s downtown branch on Sept. 19th. (click here for event information)
Present:
The Adventuress came to Seattle in 1952 and today, 100 years later, she is alive and well and serves as the flagship vessel of Sound Experience, a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of Puget Sound through educational programs for youth and adults. Sound Experience has an incredible team of educators & sailors who run programs including day sails and over-night programs. In support for the schooner and on-board programs, The Adventuress team has been on a year long funding quest to raise $1m for the Adventuress Centennial Restoration Project. JAS has very happily chosen to support them in the final push to raise the remaining $150k to finish the restoration.
Future:
The captain & crew of Adventuress are very excited about their latest long term endeavor, to update the schooner and her systems to be the first maritime LEED certified vessel. The Adventuress is the ideal teaching platform for environmental stewardship and the protection of Puget Sound. Sound Experience is constantly thinking about the future and sustainability. Putting their money and energies towards being 100% environmentally sustainable. This means zero impact…They are working on schemes to generate all of their own power and handle all waste recycling on board ship or at dockside. Very exciting times ahead on this newest of her many expeditions.
So thank you Pat for bringing the richness, heritage & spirit of Adventuress to us at JAS For more than 20 years we have worked hard to create a place which believes in the strength of relationships whether that be with our buildings, neighborhoods, city, co-workers, or clients. The restoration of Adventuress is about preserving a “real place” that for the last century and the next gives us a connection to what is good and true here in Puget Sound.
We’ve fallen in love with this boat, come check out our Pinterest board: The Adventuress and if you ever have the time, look for the schedule for public sails and go aboard…trust me you will not regret it!
